Go on a journey through the ecosystems of the world within the verdant glasshouses and tropical habitats at this exciting section of Roundhay Park.

Tropical World is a fun-filled family attraction in the expansive grounds of Roundhay Park, where you can explore rainforests, deserts and nocturnal habitats. Discover a vast array of tropical species and lush foliage in the glasshouses, spot reptiles and meerkats in their enclosures and marvel at the myriad colors of butterflies.

Grab a map or chat to a staff member to begin your exploration of Tropical World. You’ll find a variety of different habitats from all over the world, including a swamp, rainforests, colorful fishponds and sandy deserts. Check out the stunning Butterfly House, where over 30 species of butterflies can be found alighting delicately on exotic plants and citrus trees. In the Australasia House, you’ll find terrapins hanging out in their pond, as well as large ferns and a tumbling waterfall. Visit the Amazon Tank to see a variety of aquatic creatures, including South American catfish and a giraffe fish.

Head to the Creature Corner and you might meet some more of Tropical World’s animals. You’ll see lizards, snakes, spiny mice and a boss monitor. Try to guess the age of the tortoises by counting the rings on their shells. Upstairs, you’ll find the Amazon and South American House, where white-faced whistling ducks make their distinctive high-pitched call.

Savannah landscapes can be seen at the Desert House, where meerkats, canaries and finches hang out amid the cacti. In the swamp area, see if you can spot the gleaming eyes of South American crocodiles, peering just above the surface of the water. Ring-tail lemurs and tamarinds swing around the aviaries in the Courtyards. Stop by the 1940s-themed Explorers Café for light refreshments and to spy the meerkats on a large screen display.

The Tropical World gift shop stocks gifts and educational toys to remember your visit by.

Tropical World is located to the west of the sprawling gardens of Roundhay Park. There is an admission fee for Tropical World, but the park is free to enter. Tropical World is open daily, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Parking is available on-site and buses stop frequently at the Roundhay Park bus station.
