Make your way through Naples’ winding streets toward the port. Before long you will end up in the central Piazza del Municipio, one of the largest town squares in Europe.
Your eye will almost certainly be drawn to the imposing shape of the Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, to the south. This medieval castle has high, turreted walls and giant round towers on either side. Built by Charles of Anjou and added to by subsequent leaders, the castle has been towering over the square for more than 700 years.
Take some time to examine the intricate details of Alfonso’s Triumphal Arch, set between the two towers and creating a spectacular entrance to the castle. This was built in the mid 15th century after Alfonso had conquered the city. Scenes of his leadership are depicted on reliefs on the outside. The Romanesque arches and the statue of St. Michael make this one of the city’s finest examples of Renaissance design. Look for the rose window on the outside of the Palatine Chapel. This is one of the only remaining original parts of the castle. It was meticulously restored after the earthquake of 1456.
Elsewhere around the square you will notice a number of other impressive buildings. Enjoy a performance in the Teatro Mercadante (Mercadante Theater), located in the north corner of the square. Performances have been staged here since the late 18th century, although the building was revamped after being bombed in World War II.
During the summer months, enjoy outdoor musical and theatrical performances to the side of the square. If winter is cold enough, the square becomes an open-air ice rink, giving you the chance to glide beneath the impressive surrounding skyline.
A large number of cafés, restaurants and food stalls are located throughout the square. Take a seat and order a traditional Italian coffee or an unbeatable Neapolitan pizza.
Piazza del Municipio is located close to the port and is open year-round. There is a taxi stand at the square and buses stop nearby.
