Get a glimpse of what Italy was like in medieval times, admire ancient architecture and enjoy the stunning views from this iconic Neapolitan building.

Surrounded by the Naples Harbor, Piazza Municipio and Palazzo San Giacomo, Castel Nuovo is part of the “Centro Storico,” the historical heart of Naples. Dating back to the 13th century and the past home of Neapolitan royalty, it is a true icon of the city.

Pause for a moment as you approach the castle to take in the sheer size and strength of the building itself. Parapet-topped towers stand in each corner and the ornate Triumphal Arch serves as a graceful entrance.

Enter the castle and learn about the fascinating history of this mighty building. First constructed by Charles I of Anjou in 1279, it has seen many kings and battles come and go and, although changes have been made, it has remained standing throughout. The name Castel Nuovo actually means “New Castle” as there were two earlier castles in the area when it was first built.

Start by exploring the different areas and exhibitions within the castle, then move on to the Museo Civico (Municipal Museum) to see its extensive range of paintings, sculptures and frescoes. Browse the galleries located over three different floors to see art ranging from the 15th through the 20th centuries.

Join one of the tours to see parts of the castle that remain closed to the general public. From the towers down to the depths of the castle, your guide will introduce you to its legends and history. One tour even requires hard hats and torches to explore the deepest parts of the building.

Before you leave, take in the views from the castle as well. Encompassing the harbor, the roofs of beautiful historic city buildings and the mighty volcanic peak of Vesuvius in the background, the views from this grand old behemoth are not to be missed.

Castel Nuovo is open daily, except Sundays, and entry fees apply. An additional fee applies for guided tours with a discount if you combine several tours. The castle is best reached on foot or by public transportation, with bus and metro stops very close by. There is also a car park beside the harbor for those arriving by car.
