Choose between old-fashioned camels and roaring four-wheel drives to explore the dry and bumpy trails of a rocky desert that is bordered by the beach.

Large mountains covered by dense vegetation contrast with vast swathes of arid ground in Desert Park Natural Reserve. Adding to the color palette is the deep blue of the sea that lines the eastern side of the park. Visit the desert with a tour operator from a nearby town to fully enjoy the spectacular surroundings.

You can also rent a four-wheel drive vehicle to get around the reserve in style. Ride up and down the bumpy ground comprised of rocks and hard divots. Meander in and out among the cacti and other plants suited to dry zones. Bring your family on a hike. As you reach higher climbs, appreciate the views of the sea and the utter serenity, away from the crowds and noise of the cities.

Relax on the beach and watch your kids frolic on the sand dunes. Bring a basket full of snacks and drinks and have a picnic in the shade of the trees. If you have snorkeling gear, glide across the surface of the sea in the pursuit of colorful fish.

Ride camels along the beach and try to spot pods of whales. You’ll have the best chance of seeing these aquatic behemoths from December through March.

Note that it is free to enter the park, which is open daily from morning until late afternoon. Make sure to bring a hat and enough water to get through the hot day.

Desert Park Natural Reserve is in the corridor linking Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo on the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula. Rent a car in Cabo San Lucas and make your way northeast along the coast for 20 minutes to reach the park. See other nearby attractions such as the Cabo Real Golf Club, the El Dorado Golf and Beach Club and Chileno Beach.
