Enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere in St. Andrew’s Church of Scotland, Tiberias. Learn about its progressive community projects and read a scripture passage. Next door stands Saint Peter’s Church, in an area where its namesake disciple is said to have lived. Both churches overlook the largest freshwater lake in Israel, on which Jesus is said to have performed his most iconic miracles. Take a canoe out on the water or go for a swim to cool down on a hot afternoon. Make the most of the scorching summers with trips to the beaches alongside the lake.
Back on the winding streets of the historic center, head to the Dona Gracia Museum to learn about Gracia Mendes Nasi, a fascinating and affluent woman in the 16th century who helped Jews escape the Inquisition. A little farther inland, find one of the crowning jewels of the region in the form of the Tomb of Maimonides. Hear the legends surrounding the 13th-century philosopher said to have been initially buried here.
