Unfortunately, during this stay the breakfast and the staff preparing and serving it were far below the standard for the rest of the hotel. The breakfast area was very cold, the french press coffee was made with the wrong grounds and was full of sludge, the kitchen did not have any lighter fare except toast that was served cold with rock hard butter and only one option for jam while the signature dish was missing mushrooms, a key ingredient; and service took almost 45 minutes. For the rest of the arts of the stay, the hotel was great as usual and we will come back, but we will get breakfast out, as we did on our second morning.

Didn’t know this was an old Insane Asylum. Doors are prison like. Actually pretty creepy place. Hallways reminded me of The Shining. It’s clean but the history was a bit much for my taste.

Very nice, but a little spooky. I did not realize that this used to be a mental hospital, so that’s on me. Very clean, and it’s gorgeous keeping the historical brick and wood, but adding a modern touch with the renovations. Cute little breakfast spot inside the hotel

The hotel was nice and the morning staff was friendly. The evening person wasn’t very friendly or helpful too be honest. I would recommend the room service at all. I was extremely disappointed that they would charge $18 for 4 overcooked slices of bacon and brownish eggs in a to go bag. The bread was stale and the jelly was expired. No idea why they would charge so much for an awful breakfast. I ended up throwing it out and going else where. The rooms are large but lack proper cleaning in common areas. The hotel overall could use an update/clean. The best part of my visit was the spa. The spa was super clean and calming. I got an amazing orange clove massage that was to die for.

Room was small but wonderful. Only complaint is that the carpet rug was filthy. I let the front desk know and they apologized.

The historical distinction of this Jeffersonian inspired property is a great story...an early american psychiatric care facility known as Western State Institute, later a medium security prison and now a classic americana hotel with impressive grounds, roof top cupola with spiral stair, comfortable bedding and helpful staff. But minimal toiletries (water glass/towels), no in-room bottled water or daily maid service, and surprisingly squeaky wooden floors detracted from the overall experience.

The malfunctioning a/c upon our arrival and the smaller than advertised pull out couch both put a damper on our stay. Interesting if creepy history for the place as an asylum for the insane and prison until as late as 2003 something we knew about in advance.

The property was historically interesting, but still has a bit of an “institutional” feel about it. The reason for the average rating mostly comes from the fact that it was challenging for me to manage bringing in the necessary bags and equipment that support my husband’s needs as a stroke survivor. I did use the bellman’s cart, which helped, but then it was difficult getting into the elevator and manage pushing the cart, then helping him to enter with his walker. When I had called to be sure that there was a restaurant on sight I was told yes, so it was a disappointment to find out that it is only open for dinners on the weekends. The young lady who prepared breakfast was most helpful, and even offered to carry my husband’s breakfast to our room, as I had my hands full. I greatly appreciated her help.
