Go hiking across a peninsula of striking rock formations and reach breathtaking lookout points at Robberg Nature Reserve. Spot majestic marine wildlife and flocks of colorful bird species. Visit a historic lighthouse and relax on secluded beaches. Robberg Nature Reserve sits on a headland at the southern tip of Plettenberg Bay and extends offshore for almost 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) into the Indian Ocean.
Three circular trails of varying levels of difficulty traverse the reserve. Pass caves and rock formations that date back to the Cretaceous era and Stone Age. Admire areas of thick montane fynbos, which have adapted to the harsh weather conditions over hundreds of years. Look up at the Cape Seal Lighthouse, which rises 479 feet (146 meters) above sea level. Gaze along the rocky coastline of the Garden Route and see the relics of a wrecked fishing trawler.
Expect to see Cape fur seals basking on the rocks and dolphins frolicking in the waves. Observe Bryde’s whales year-round and southern right whales between May and November. Humpback whales come from early November to late February and again from May to June. Get close to rock dassies, small mammals related to elephants, and the blue duiker, which is the smallest antelope in the Western Cape region. Watch myriad birdlife such as the broad-billed prion, kelp gull and shy albatross.
Walk down onto the beaches, where Portuguese explorers ran aground in 1630 and set up camp while they built new boats. Swimming is allowed, although only recommended for skilled and confident swimmers because of strong currents. Purchase a permit and fish from the rocks and shoreline. Join a kayak tour from Plettenberg Bay and paddle around the peninsula.
The reserve is about a 15-minute drive south of Plettenberg Bay’s town center. Parking is available at the start of the trails. Bring food and use barbecue and picnic areas adjacent to the parking lot.
Robberg Nature Reserve is open year-round and has free admission. Weather conditions can change quickly so bring warm clothing, especially if visiting in the evening. Purchase a fishing permit at the post office in Plettenberg Bay.
