Muro Alto Beach (Praia do Muro Alto) is one of the most beautiful beaches in the state of Pernambuco. Enjoy its perfect setting for sunbathing, cooling off with a refreshing swim and eating at beachfront bars. The beach is an extension of the coastline of Porto de Galhinas, which is a favorite hangout among surfers. The name Muro Alto means high wall and is a reference to the tall sand dunes.
This is a great location if you want to relax and appreciate Brazil’s famous beach lifestyle. The natural scenery is spectacular and consists of a sweep of white sand backed by mangroves and coconut palms. Rent umbrellas and sun loungers or simply stroll until you find a secluded spot to spread a towel or blanket on the sand.
Go for a swim in the calm water of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the presence of a long reef, a natural pool forms along the shoreline. Get closer to the reef via rented kayak or stand-up paddleboard. At low tide it’s possible to paddle out and spot an array of tropical fish in the rock pools.
Bars line the beach and specialize in fish and seafood dishes, including deep-fried calamari and shrimp. Accompany your meal with a cold beer, fresh fruit juices or soft drinks. Behind the dunes is a collection of upmarket resort hotels. Most have facilities such as private beach access, restaurants, swimming pools and watersport centers.
Muro Alto Beach is about a 1-hour drive south of Recife and a 10-minute drive north of Porto de Galinhas. A regular public bus route runs to and from Porto de Galinhas. For a fun way to get here rent a buggy and make stops at Pernambuco’s dazzling series of coastal villages. The beach connects with Camboa Beach to the north and Cupe Beach to the south. From here you can continue on foot to Porto de Galinhas.
