Choose between salt water and fresh water at this gorgeous white-sand beach, which has ocean on one side and a scenic lake on the other.

Spend a morning exploring the picturesque biking and walking trails that surround Gyeongpo Lake. Then head to Gyeongpo Beach in the afternoon to relax on the ocean sands. Swim in the ocean, ride a banana boat and take advantage of the bustling stores and seafood restaurants that have been built all along one of the biggest beaches on South Korea’s eastern coast.

Visit Gyeongpo Beach in the summer and you will likely find it alive with people of all ages. Lounge on the sand, go for an oceanfront horseback ride or join those who fly across the water’s surface on rented Jet Skis or tubes. Come on a weekday afternoon or during the cooler seasons to find the beach less bustling. When you get hungry, select shrimp, lobster or other seafood from the many tanks filled with live seafood outside the local restaurants. Savor the rich aroma as your meal is barbecued on an outdoor grill right in front of you.

Leave lots of time to explore the other side of the beach, which is fringed by tall, lush pines. This is the beautiful setting of Gyeongpo Lake. It offers a wonderful change in atmosphere from the ocean beach. Bring binoculars and look out at the birds that thrive in the marshlands around this lovely body of water. Spot old-fashioned statues dotted around the area and walk over the pretty wooden bridges that crisscross the wetlands.

Choose just the right time of year for your visit to Gyeongpo Beach and enjoy colorful annual celebrations in addition to the usual oceanfront fun. Plan your trip for spring to enjoy the Festival of Cherry Blossoms. Throughout the summer, a wide range of events is held here, including a literary festival and a dance festival.

Make the most of Gyeongpo Beach’s excellent facilities, which include changing rooms, showers and even a campsite. Stay overnight in the charming city of Gangneung or come on a daytrip from Seoul. By bus, the journey takes less than 3 hours.
