Relax on an uncrowded beach, cycle along a winding trail and see a range of natural environments, such as swamps, wetlands and dunes.

First Landing State Park is a picturesque site with a varied terrain and a multitude of activities. It covers an area of 2,888 acres (1,168 hectares), with beaches and freshwater areas that are ideal for swimming, boating and fishing. Arrive at the information center to learn about the park, its ecosystems and activities.

Follow some of the hiking trails with your family to explore the park on foot. The park has 20 miles (32 kilometers) of trails that meander through cypress swamps, freshwater wetlands and dunes. Rent a bike from the park store or from shops in Virginia Beach and cycle along the Cape Henry bike trail, which is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) long.

Use the boat launch in the Narrows area. This area is the park’s most popular section for fishing and crabbing for those with Virginia saltwater fishing licenses. Note that swimming is not permitted here.

Wander along the sandy stretch of Chesapeake Bay Beach and enjoy the vista of the ocean. Lifeguards do not patrol the bay but swimming is permitted here. Enjoy the serenity at this uncrowded beach and bring your kids to swim in the generally calm waters. Bring snacks and refreshments and set up a picnic on one of the designated tables.

Stay overnight at one of about 200 campsites in the park to sleep close to nature. Pets are allowed for an additional fee. Consider lodging in a cabin for a more comfortable stay.

There is a vehicle fee to enter the park. The grounds and trails are open daily from morning until sunset.

First Landing State Park is on Cape Henry and stands roughly 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Virginia Beach in the state of Virginia. Drive here from the city in about 15 minutes and leave your car in the free parking lot. You can also take buses to arrive in an hour. Visit nearby landmarks, such as Wolfsnare Creek, Long Creek and the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club.
