With spotless beaches, dramatic desert landscapes and reef systems rich with marine life, Western Australia's Coral Coast is an awesome destination for nature lovers. The region's appeal also extends to its history and culture. Feed dolphins in the wild, investigate reefs, enjoy desert safaris and view Aboriginal art.
One of the Coral Coast's biggest draws is its diverse marine life. Start your exploration of the underwater world at Exmouth, the gateway to the Ningaloo Reef, one of the longest fringing coral reefs in the world. Scuba dive this World Heritage Site to see manta rays and whale sharks. Snorkel the reef from a beach or on organized snorkeling tours. From June to November, join a whale-watching tour for close-up views of migrating humpback whales that winter in Ningaloo's warmer waters.
Travel south along the coast for approximately 440 miles (708 kilometers) to Monkey Mia where you can touch and feed the wild dolphins that swim to the shore. Farther south is Cervantes, an attractive fishing village with white-sand beaches and offshore coral reefs.
Then head toward Nambung National Park. On the way, stop by the coastal city of Geraldton. Study exhibitions on the area's cultural, natural and indigenous history at the Museum of Geraldton. Tour the early 20th-century St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and purchase original Aboriginal art from the Yamaji Art Center.
Once you arrive at the national park go to Pinnacles Desert, a collection of ancient petrified limestone pillars that rise above the yellow sands. Walk among the naturally formed structures on a 45-minute walking trail and learn more about their geology at the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Center. While you are in the park, go to Lake Thetis to see the thrombolites, rock-like structures made up of colonies of bacteria. Then relax on the beaches at Kangaroo Point and Hangover Bay.
To experience the Coral Coast’s awesome scenery, indigenous heritage and cultural attractions fly into the international airport at Perth, Western Australia's capital city. Travel around the region by car, bus and intrastate flights.
