Convent Gallery Tours

Daylesford

Come to this central Victorian exhibit space to admire its eclectic mix of artwork, see its heritage architectural features, browse its sculpture garden and relax in its café.

The Convent Gallery is located in the historic spa town of Daylesford in central Victoria. A historic building itself, the Convent Gallery is a combination of art gallery, bar, café, event center and scenic garden.

Gaze up as you approach the Convent Gallery to appreciate the architecture and history of the building. The 1860s building was once a private mansion named Blarney Castle. The Catholic Church purchased it in the 1890s and made it onto a convent for the Sisters of the Presentation Order.

The convent doubled as a girls’ boarding school and other additions were added in the early 1900s. In 1988, artist Tina Banitska purchased the long-neglected convent. After extensive renovations, she opened the Convent Gallery in 1991.

Visit the gallery and take your time to appreciate the vast array of art on display. The eight different exhibition spaces display artworks of wide ranging styles on different media. Local emerging artists as well as established international artists have created the exhibited pieces. Rotating and themed exhibitions offer an element of surprise for returning visitors.

Ascend the stairs to experience the peace and tranquility of The Chapel. It was the place of worship for 90 years and still retains its sacred atmosphere. Take a seat on a pew to admire all the adornments in the serenity of the chapel.

Head out into the gardens to appreciate the artists’ sculptures and nature’s own creations that are scattered throughout the grounds. The theme of the sculptures changes throughout the gardens. The artworks are placed to blend in with and enhance the natural environment. Find the stork bench and take a seat to reflect upon your surroundings.

Return to the buildings and visit the café or bar for a drink or something to eat. The café sources quality local ingredients for Mediterranean-style snacks and meals while the bar offers a stylish environment to sample a cocktail or local wine. Pop into the gift shop to finish off your visit and for the chance to purchase an arty souvenir of your visit to the Convent Gallery.

The Convent Gallery is open daily except for public holidays. Entry fees apply. The heritage building can be easily reached by car or on foot from central Daylesford. Parking is free.
