Ring the lucky wishing bell and climb the 99 stone steps to reach the tower of this quaint island church.

The Church of Sv Marika Bozja is a charming building on the magnificent setting of Lake Bled. The small island is full of plant life and offers spectacular views of the lake, forests and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims to this 17th-century church and see its impressive relics from centuries ago.

Reach the island church via the pletna vessel, unique to Bled. The traditional boat is a small gondola with a roof and space for one rower. Capture photos of the church with its large tower rising above the trees to a height of 177 feet (54 meters). Climb the 99 stone steps to reach the top of the tower and enjoy an excellent vista of the lake and Bled Castle to the north.

Admire the Gothic frescoes that decorate the walls of the church’s interior. Some works of art pre-date the church, having survived earthquakes that destroyed previous buildings. Marvel at the 18th-century golden carving on the main altar and note the paintings of the Virgin Mary and King Henry II with his wife Kunigunda.

Ring the wishing bell, which is said to grant good luck. Listen to legends about the origins of this bell, allegedly sent by the pope. Stroll around the hilly islet to get to know some of the other buildings scattered around it.

Learn about the context behind this intriguing church, which hosts weddings and attracts many visitors. Archeological excavations have found traces of much earlier settlements here, including 124 skeleton graves from the Middle Ages. The religious site is also known as the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary.

There is a small fee for admission that includes access to the bell tower and an opportunity to ring the bell and make a wish. The church opens daily from morning until evening.

The Church of Sv Marikia Bozja is on an island in Lake Bled. Hire a pletna pilot or rent a boat from the park on the southern bank of the lake to row to the island in a few minutes.
