Take an audio tour and admire the majestic Commons Room and Nationality Rooms in one of the world’s tallest Gothic buildings.

Among the most iconic landmarks in Pittsburgh, the Cathedral of Learning is an educational institute and part of the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus. The 42-floor skyscraper rises above the cityscape with its Late Gothic Revival design. Take photos from a distance to include the entirety of this impressive building in the shot.

Gaze up toward the summit of the enormous tower, which is 535 feet (163 meters) tall. The large building has thousands of rooms and windows and is the location of the university’s Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. It also contains a studio theater, study lounges, computer labs and a food court.

Purchase a postcard with a photo of this impressive highlight, which is the main symbol of the university. Admire the range of stained glass and ironwork on the building façade.

Embark on a self-guided audio tour or a group tour for a small fee. Enter the Commons Room on the fourth floor for its spectacular arches and chandeliers. See some of the 29 Nationality Rooms, which represent countries that had an impact on the city’s development.

Other impressive rooms in this skyscraper include the Babcock Room, the Frick Auditorium and the Mulert Memorial Room. Take the elevator up to the University Honors College and enjoy the panoramic view of the rest of Pittsburgh through the windows.

Construction of the building first commenced in 1926. In recent years, families of peregrine falcons have made their nests at the building’s summit. Before or after your visit watch the site’s falcon cam to see these birds in their homes.

The Cathedral of Learning is in the northern part of the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus in the North Oakland part of the city. Ride a bus to one of the many stops along the adjacent streets. See nearby sights, such as St. Paul Cathedral, the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and the Heinz Memorial Chapel.
