In just a few years, the modern Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) has become an iconic building in downtown Edmonton. Its contemporary curved facade makes the silver exterior of the gallery a work of art in itself. Inside, this architectural marvel is entirely dedicated to the preservation and display of art and visual culture, just as it did when it was still the Edmonton Art Gallery. Browse over 6,000 paintings, installation works, photos and sculptures by historic and contemporary artists.
Founded in 1924, the original Edmonton Museum of Arts has had nearly a century to establish its huge collection. The several name changes, moves and renovation haven’t altered the fact that this institution consistently offers a diverse and interesting range of visual arts.
Make your way through the three floors of exhibition space to see some of the highlights. The diverse and changing exhibitions featured at the gallery give visitors an opportunity to see artwork created by local, regional, national and international artists.
The Tours for Tots, on Wednesday mornings, is for children aged 3-5. Activities include themed art-making and story-telling relevant to the exhibitions that are on display at the time.
Adults can drop in on workshops held every Wednesday evening. Classes range from printmaking, drawing and wood-block printing to clay relief sculpting, mixed-media collaging and large-scale rhythm painting.
You could spend a few hours browsing the exhibitions, then visit the gift store and have lunch at the Terrace Café.
Tours are included in the admission price and leave from the lobby throughout the day on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Private group tours and discounts are available. The gallery is closed on Mondays. Lockers are available for personal items.
AGA is accessible by bus and train, with the Churchill Station less than 200 feet (60 meters) away. There are plenty of street parking spaces and underground car parks within a five-minute walk from the venue. The gallery is open daily, except Mondays, with extended opening hours from Tuesday to Fridays. The admission price is discounted for families.
