Learn about the history of the building, which was built between 1898 and 1904 under the orders of Mayor Theodósio Paiva. In the 1950s Mayor Djalma Maranhão renamed the theater after an earlier governor. The theater has been restored and renovated several times, particularly in 2004 to mark its centennial year.
