Encased in floor-to-ceiling glass, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) Shanghai was established in 2005 as the city’s first non-profit, independently-operated contemporary art institution. Situated in the People’s Park, this light-filled museum showcases the latest in contemporary art, as well as retrospectives ranging from animation to fashion design.
Wander up the sweeping ground-to-first-floor ramp to admire paintings, sculptures and installations by well-known and up-and-coming Chinese and international artists. On the third floor you’ll find MoCA’s “living exhibition,” a restaurant and bar called the Art Lab. Enjoy cocktails and cuisine amid contemporary artworks, music and design, all with a rooftop view over the city.
For a deeper understanding of the various artworks on display, join a guided tour. Lectures, discussions and creative saloons also feature as part of the exhibition programs. These talks are a great way to meet fellow art-lovers from all over the world.
MoCA Shanghai is not just for adults there are plenty of activities to keep children entertained as well. Art teachers hold afternoon art activities in the Kid’s Corner on weekends, and there are art history, art appreciation and hands-on creative art classes for grown-ups too.
Pick up a souvenir from the museum shop, which features the creations of local designers and artists.
MoCA offers discounted admission fees for students, seniors and groups. Phone the museum to check the dates and prices of tours and activities. No flash photography is allowed in the museum.
